The Animals at Old Lanwarnick

Stopping to appreciate what is around you is sometimes the greatest luxury you can give yourself. To pause, breathe and allow your surroundings to settle. To step away from the constant pull of everyday life and let the world slow, even briefly. When that pause is shared, it becomes more than a break. It becomes a quiet reconnection with nature and with the animals at Old Lanwarnick, whose presence subtly shapes the experience.

On our small island that can so often feel busy, finding places that offer genuine seclusion can seem difficult. Travel west by train or road and the landscape begins to soften. Towns thin out, skies widen and the coastline opens into unspoilt beaches and rolling countryside. Within this calmer setting, the animals become gentle companions, reminding visitors that life can be both peaceful and playful.

Set within thirty-four acres of Cornish countryside, Old Lanwarnick invites a stripped-back way of living. Woodland paths weave through the estate and muddy tracks lead towards wild winter beaches, far from summer crowds. Around every corner, life on the estate unfolds naturally. An alpaca watches quietly from a paddock, ducks drift across the pond, and chickens scratch about their day.

As evening draws in, you return to your cottage and light the wood burner, its warmth spreading as darkness settles outside. Later, soaking in the hot tub beneath a star-filled sky, the sounds of the countryside replace the noise of daily life. The rhythm here is unhurried, shaped by the steady routines of the residents who call this place home.

It is not just the landscape that encourages a slower pace. The animals form a central part of the stay, offering simple moments that feel increasingly rare, especially for those arriving from urban life. Curious alpacas linger by the fence, goats greet visitors with enthusiasm, and ducks gather hopefully at the pond’s edge. These small encounters ask nothing of you except attention.

The Alpacas

The alpacas are often the first to capture attention. The boys’ paddock is a study in contrasting personalities. Tenby is the picture of calm, contentedly focused on grazing regardless of what is happening around him. Toddy, ever alert, watches over the group with quiet diligence.

Toulouse is impossible to miss. The largest of the herd and very much in charge, he approaches visitors with confidence, his size softened by long lashes and a surprisingly cuddly nature. Trinidad, the smallest of the boys, balances cheekiness with an easy charm, while Thierry, recognisable by his fluffy ears, adds a note of whimsy.

The girls bring their own presence. Elegance lives up to her name, standing tall and regal, a gentle soul who keeps a watchful eye on the cria. Malteser is calm and curious, a devoted mother with a relaxed air. Delilah, Gala and Halo complete the group, each adding something distinct to the dynamic. Time spent here is less about observation and more about sharing the stillness they create.

The Goats

Nearby, the goats bring a different energy to life on the estate. Ben, calm and steady, is the clear leader. Batman is often the instigator of mischief, while Flash, Arrow, Alfie and Penny ensure there is never a dull moment. Their playful nature adds warmth and humour to daily routines.

The Ducks and Chickens

Down by the pond, the ducks move through their day with purpose. Fudge and Frank tend to lead the way, followed closely by Peggy, Robin, Lottie, Poppy and Daisy. Alongside them, the chickens rule their roost with quiet confidence. Visitors often find themselves lingering here, drawn into the gentle rhythm of rural life.

Together, the animals at Old Lanwarnick form the quiet heartbeat of the estate. Their presence draws you into the moment, encourages a slower pace and creates a sense of connection that lingers long after you leave. This is not simply a place to stay, but a place to inhabit, gently and fully.

Come and meet them for yourself this spring. Wander the fields, spend time with the herd and let their small hooves and big personalities shape your stay. Availability is open now, and your Cornish countryside escape is waiting.
