Romantic getaway in Cornwall

Sometimes it’s good to step away and just listen to the silence. To bid a temporary goodbye to the frenetic demands of your everyday life; to slow right down and contemplate where you’re at, as the rest of the world charges on. And if you can do this with someone special, really special, then it becomes a rich journey of unhurried discovery; a romantic getaway in Cornwall that will forge memories which will last you a lifetime.

It can be difficult to find pockets of peace and moments of relaxation amongst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But travel west, by train or car, and watch as the urban sprawl and the ebb of the crowd slowly melts away to be replaced by open spaces and unspoilt beaches. Discover a world that is not shackled to the daily grind. And head to a place that is a secluded haven, surrounded by thirty four tranquil acres of unspoiled countryside. Head to Old Lanwarnick for a Valentine’s Day experience in the heart of the Cornish countryside.

Here you can embark upon a romantic getaway in Cornwall and discover the beauty of the countryside. Muddy woodland walks will beckon and lead you to wild beaches that are resting from the summer throng and remain resolutely empty at this time of year. Then return to your cosy cottage to light the wood burner before ending the day in the hot tub gazing up at the stars.

The Camel Estuary, Cornwall

Five things to elevate your romantic break

What are the five things that will contribute to your romantic getaway in Cornwall at Old Lanwarnick? Well, having been here for quite a while, we believe the following will enhance your romantic interlude and leave you feeling loved-up and happy. They are, in no particular order – places to dine; places to be pampered, places to walk, cosy nights in and places to explore.

Bodmin Jail

Book ahead – places to dine

If you’re setting out or have explored enough for the day then let someone else prepare and serve that breakfast or evening dinner. We can recommend four places that will appeal to any Don Juan or Juliet. Beginning with the Plough Inn at Duloe, just down the road this establishment has long been a hub of the community, having welcomed people through its doors for many years. Formerly known as the Ye Olde Plough House Inn, the building is in a beautiful wooded valley and is believed to date back to the 16th or 17th century. They have also just been awarded a Blue Ribbon from the 2023/2024 Good Food awards.

Not too far away you’ll find the Jubilee Inn in Pelynt. A family run pub it was originally known as the Axe but took on its current moniker in 1887 to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. Warm and friendly you’ll find a welcoming interior, heated by open fires and a snug place to cosy up in, under low beamed ceilings. Indulge in a delicious meal with a glass of wine in hand and don’t forget to bring your four-legged friend along to this dog-friendly pub.

The Harbour Green House in the middle of Polperro, is a restaurant serving great homemade food. If you’re thinking of exploring this little harbour then consider starting your day here – they do a wonderful breakfast.

Also in Polperro is Michelle’s Restaurant, another family run eatery, specialising in locally caught fish & shellfish. Located close to the harbour it has become a firm favourite and boasts a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor.

Spa Treatments at The Scarlet Hotel, perfect for a romantic getaway in Cornwall

Pamper yourself (or someone else!)

As part of your romantic getaway in Cornwall, why not indulge in some pampering? When it comes to spas and treatment therapy centres Cornwall doesn’t go lacking. One of our favourites is the Scarlet Hotel over at Mawgan Porth. One review says: “This adults-only boutique bolthole has become a Cornish classic for those seeking serenity in a spectacular setting. The sense of place in the spa is fantastic (as are its facilities), so time here doesn’t feel like time spent away from the beautiful beach just beyond. The whole is deeply romantic and restorative.”

The Waves Spa at the Hannafore Point Hotel is open to the general public, offering full access to the indoor heated pool, steam room, sauna, hydrotherapy pool, heated mosaic loungers, relaxation room and a fully equipped gymnasium. Situated at the tail end of the B325 in Hannafore, West Looe it is only 5 miles from Old Lanwarnick.

On Sea Road, St Austell you’ll find the Carlyon Bay Hotel, who offer spa and treatment sessions. Enjoy the wonderful feeling of lying on a hot stone bed, fashioned to the shape of your body. Let your worries drift away in the warm indoor pool, outdoor pool or spa bath. You’ll also find a poolside sauna or steam room to completely relax and restore you.

Finally there are spa treatments to be had at Old Lanwarnick itself. Terry, our fully-qualified therapist with over eleven years of experience, will come to your cottage to provide a wide range of treatments without you having to go anywhere. Her affordable therapies range from facials to massages, pedicures to pamper packages.

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Long romantic walks

What could be better than to head out with someone you cherish on a slow amble through the countryside? At Old Lanwarnick, we are surrounded by 34 acres in which to explore including a beautiful area of woodland where you can enjoy peaceful walks surrounded by nature at your own pace as well as dedicated fields for your pooch.

A perfect location to walk and re-engage with someone is Cardinham Woods. Situated in central Cornwall it has everything you could want from an outdoor woodland trek. The diverse mix of trees is full of small open spaces, allowing you to take a step back from the freneticism of life and into a haven of natural beauty.

Perhaps heading out across open moorland is your thing? In which case Bodmin Moor is the place for you. As an AONB this remote and heather covered, upland granite moorland carries open access status, which means that members of the public have the right to walk freely within designated areas without having to stick to paths. If this fills you with fear then pick up one of the county’s newest official trails, the Copper Trail, devised in 2005 by Mark Camp, a local moorland authority. It starts in the village of Minions, which is accessible by car from the road that links Launceston and Liskeard.

If all this sounds too exhausting then sample the Camel Valley Vineyard. They’ve been producing award-winning, world-class wines here since 1989 and offer guided tours with a wine tasting session to round off the walk. Cheers!

Eden Project, Rainforest Biome

Big days out

Head out for an exciting trip to Adrenalin Quarry where you can throw axes, hurtle down a zip wire or power a hovercraft around the quarry lake. And for those who like to include a little historical flavour to their destination there’s Bodmin Jail, where you can unlock Cornwall’s dark penal past. Or if you prefer to travel back in time in a more romantic way, make for Jamaica Inn, perched high up on Bodmin Moor. We recommend travelling there by car, as opposed to the way that Daphne du Maurier was forced to encounter it, having lost herself until late at night when out horse riding. However, this experience inspired her to write her famous and compelling novel of the same name. One more recommendation – The Eden Project. If you haven’t heard of this unique attraction then you must have been living in a bubble! It’s well worth putting on the bucket list and then ticking it off.

Scrabble Board Games, a romantic getaway in Cornwall

Or just stay in

Sometimes the urge to head outside just disappears as quickly as the sun heads behind a cloud. Staying in one of our cosy cottages has all the intrigue of being somewhere away from home but at the same time manages to capture the familiarity of where you live. They are the perfect places to relax in. Prepare ahead – buy a box of chocolates and cosy up for a lovely night accompanied by a bottle of wine from the Camel Vineyard, whilst indulging in a film or board game in front of the roaring fire.
